Choosing the right location for your photo session can make a big difference in the overall look and feel of your photos . . .
Luckily, we’re surrounded by some truly beautiful spots here in northern Minnesota. Whether you're dreaming of iron ore backdrops, golden hour at the lake, or a quiet field full of tall grass, there's a perfect place out there for you.
Since I'm based in Hibbing, all of the locations on this list are within an hour or so of me and are not subject to any kind of travel fee. These spots work wonderfully for families, couples, or just about anyone wanting to capture a little northern Minnesota magic:
1. LaRue Pit - Nashwauk, MN
This spot might be the most “Iron Range” location on the list. With its red rock, reflective water, and surrounding greenery, it creates a bold and beautiful backdrop for any type of session. Since it's in a pit and surrounded by trees, golden hour light hits earlier—usually a couple of hours before sunset.
2. O'Brien Reservoir - Nashwauk, MN
One of my favorite local beach spots for sunset sessions (in all seasons)! It offers a great mix of scenery with beach, grassy fields, and wooded paths. I also love walking out on the frozen lake during the winter. Because it’s a public recreation area, there may be others around—but I’ve never had trouble finding space for beautiful shots.
3. Carey Lake - Hibbing, MN
One of my favorite locations! Perfect for an open-field, rolling-hills vibe. The sun falls behind the trees in the evening, creating beautiful, even lighting. The field area is about a 5-minute walk from the parking lot, and it's beautiful during spring, summer, fall, and even early winter if we don't have much snow. There’s also lake/dock access just down the road.
4. Disc Golf Course - Hibbing, MN
The Hibbing disc golf course is in a historic area in Old Hibbing, and is perfect for a session at any time of the day. There are plenty of trees for shade coverage, and the area is relatively accessible (no long walks required).
5. Pokegema Dam - Grand Rapids, MN
This is one of my go-to winter locations (as long as it isn't too windy). There are some pretty trails, a river, and a fabulous bridge. It's also dog-friendly. Sessions during other seasons are beautiful here as well!
6. McCarthy Beach State Park - Side Lake, MN
Another lovely sunset beach location, with the bonus of tall pine trees that add a woodsy feel to your gallery. Since it’s a state park, a parking pass is required—$7 for a day pass if you don’t have an annual permit.
7. Minnesota Discovery Center - Chisholm, MN
The outdoor grounds here are absolutely beautiful, and there are some nice trees that make it a good option for afternoon sessions. Since it is a museum, there's an admission fee and limited hours that we would have to work around. I also try to avoid sessions here on days when they're having special events (especially weddings).
8. Highland Park - Hibbing, MN
Simple, central, and convenient. This in-town park works well for early morning sessions. Great for keeping things easy and close to home!
9. Sunshine Soul Lifestyle Studio - Hibbing, MN
This studio is a great choice for indoor sessions year-round. It offers a clean, neutral, well-lit space that works in any season. It's located just outside of Hibbing and costs $50 to rent (for one-hour sessions, I cover the rental fee).
10. Olcott Park Greenhouse - Virginia, MN
This greenhouse is a beautiful option year-round. There is plenty of beautiful greenery and natural light. It is available to rent from the city for a fee, but it is also generally open to the public to use for free (there is a slight risk of it being rented/in use, though). It is also kept very warm, so dress accordingly!
